Indoor Cycling for Beginners: What to Expect at Your First Class

By Terri DizilloOwner of FortCycle

Walking into any fitness class for the first time can feel intimidating. Indoor cycling? Even more so — there are special shoes, unfamiliar bikes, and a room full of people who seem to know what they're doing.

But here's the truth: every single rider in that room was once a first-timer too. And at FortCycle, we make sure your first experience is welcoming, not overwhelming.

Before Class

Arrive 10-15 minutes early. An instructor will:

  • Help you set up your bike (seat height, handlebar position, resistance)
  • Show you how the metrics display works
  • Explain the basics of the ride format
  • Make sure you're comfortable before the music starts

Wear comfortable workout clothes and athletic shoes. Cycling shoes are great if you have them, but regular sneakers work fine.

During Class

The room goes dark. The music kicks in. And your instructor guides you through the ride with energy, encouragement, and clear cues.

Here's what you need to know:

  • Go at your own pace. Every ride is adjustable. Your resistance knob is your best friend.
  • Nobody is watching you. Everyone is focused on their own ride.
  • It's okay to take breaks. Reduce your resistance, slow your pedals, drink water. No judgment.
  • The music makes it fly by. Before you know it, 45 minutes are gone.

After Class

You'll feel accomplished, energized, and probably a little sweaty. Most first-timers say: "That was way more fun than I expected."
